Numerous voyages across the Tasman Sea

McCallum had an enduring love for Australia. His first diary starts there (in 1890), and he died there in 1939.  In between, he made fourteen separate journeys to Australia often spending extended time there.

Reason for travel

Early on, McCallum travelled for work. He also had his honeymoon there.  Later on, it was to visit friends and for leisure. He had an affinity for the country, the landscape and the people.

In travelled to Australia regularly in the early years and his later years. He travelled in 1890, 1892, 1889, twice in 1900, 1905, 1912, 1928, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938 & 1939. Noticeable gaps only appear during the period when his children were young.

He traveled by steamship. Flying was not an option since commercial flights between the two countries did not begin until the mid 1940‘s, after the diarist had died.
