New Zealand

Adopted Homeland

In his adopted homeland of New Zealand McCallum traveled extensively and often. He traveled for adventure, to visit friends, and for his work.

Reason For Travel

Distance was not an impediment for him taking on construction projects.  He tendered (bid) on jobs far and wide and frequently ventured to remote parts of the country to work.

He built a hotel in Rotorua, a school in Kokako, hundreds of miles away from his Auckland home and where access was often extremely difficult.

Towns And Cities He Visited

McCallum’s NZ travels spanned the length of the country, from Whangaroa in the north to Bluff in the South Island. He visited the cities and small provincial towns.

Aromoho, Awito, Bluff, Bulls, Cambridge, Cape Colville, Christchurch, Coromandel, Dunedin, Flagstaff, Frankton, Frasertown, Gisborne, Hamilton, Hamurana Spring, Hastings, Hicks Bay, Hunterville, Huntly, Hunua, Invedale, Invercargill, Kaipara Heads, Kamo, Kamo Springs, Karangahake , Katikati, Kawakawa Beach, Kawau, Kihikihi, Kokako, Lake Rotoiti , Lyttleton, Mahurangi Heads, Mangaweka, Mangonui, Marsden Point, Marton, Maungatawhiri, Mercer, Moengauhine, Mokoia , Mosgiel, Mount Maunganui, Napier, Nelson, New Plymouth, Newtown, Ngaruawahia , Ngongotaha, Nihotipu Falls, Nuhaka, Oamaru, Ohinemutu, Onewhero, Oriental Bay, Paerata, Paeroa, Pakowhai, Parua Bay, Patumanu, Pigeon Rocks, Pipiriki, Pirongia, Pokeno, Poor Knight Islands, Port Chalmers, Puhoi, Pukoroa, Purewa, Ramarama, Roraroa Island, Roslyn, Rotorua, Ruahauna, Ruatangata, Russell, Silverdale, Stratford, Sumner, Tamahere, Tauranga, Te Aroha, Te Awamutu, Te Mangwhai, Thames, Three Kings, Timaru, Tuakau, Turangi Creek, Waihi, Waingaro, Waiotapu, Waipu, Wairoa, Wairora, Wairou, Waitangi, Waiwera, Wanganui, Wellington, Whakarewarewa, Whangarei, Whangarei Heads, Whangaroa Harbour, White Island.

Method Of Travel

Provincial towns were reached via steamship or train. From there, final destinations were reached by horseback, cutter, or walking.

The sheer volume of his domestic travel is impressive considering the times. Many contemporary New Zealanders may not have traveled so extensively around the country even with the convenience of modern-day roads and cars.
