The McCallum Archive

Collection of secret journals, business records and artifacts

Hidden for over 100 years… discovered buried within the walls of an historic bed and breakfast

The Victorian Capsule Preservation Trust is undertaking a landmark project to preserve The McCallum Archive, a recently discovered collection of journals, business records, and personal documents spanning 49 years from 1890 to 1938. They are the records of Robert H. McCallum, a prominent community activist, influential builder, global traveler, and colorful historical figure during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

In total, 49 journals are unearthed, one for each year. The discovery is significant because the five-decade span establishes it as one of the longest continuous records of daily living in the English-speaking world. The archive’s monumental scale of over 17,000 daily entries, in combination with its global setting, and breadth of content offer unique differentiators in the heritage world.

The McCallum Archive interlaces accounts of daily living with notable historical events. Eyewitness accounts such as the Suffrage Movement, Prohibition, and the Spanish Flu Epidemic are interwoven with detailed descriptions of everyday life. This offers unparalleled insights into how broader historical events impacted ordinary people and their communities.

The archive covers a wide range of disciplines set in locations all over the world –  politics, activism, colonialism, health and medicine, sex, social history, labor and economics, science and technology, travel, arts and culture, sport and entertainment and film/cinema. In addition, the documents provide rare insights into provocative social history themes rarely divulged from this period such as mental illness, promiscuity, and marital dysfunction.

McCallum was a prominent figure who made significant contributions to his field and community. His records also reveal a spirited, flawed character with moral failings and deviant behavior. Few real historic figures have led such colorful lives or matched McCallum’s vitality over such an extended time. McCallum was cunning enough to hide his journals in a way he believed they would never be found. He leaves behind an invaluable primary source of material for a great many types of historical inquiry.
